Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis Helps 75 OBC Students. Student Gets Foreign Scholarships
In a swift move, the intervention of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has enabled 75 deserving students from the Other Backward Classes (OBC), Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT), and Special Backward Class (SBC) communities to secure scholarships for higher education abroad for the academic year 2024-25.
The issue was brought to Fadnavis' attention by OBC organizations, following which he convened a meeting to assess the situation. The government acted quickly, selecting the eligible students and approving the scholarships within just three days. This prompt action has been appreciated by the OBC organizations.
The Foreign Education Scholarship Scheme for students from VJNT, OBC, and SBC communities was first implemented in 2019-20. The scheme provides financial assistance to meritorious students from these communities to pursue higher education in foreign universities.
For the 2024-25 academic year, the government has set the number of scholarships at 75. Earlier this year, applications were invited, and the Directorate of OBC Welfare formed a committee to thoroughly review the submissions.
After the committee's scrutiny and evaluation of the applicants' merit, the final list of 75 students was selected on September 23 by a committee headed by the Principal Secretary of the OBC Welfare Department.
The selected students, coming from diverse academic backgrounds, will now have the opportunity to study at prestigious international universities. However, the scholarships come with a condition - the beneficiaries must sign an agreement to use their acquired skills and knowledge for the service of the country after completing their education abroad.
This swift action by the Deputy Chief Minister and the government demonstrates their commitment to providing educational opportunities to the underprivileged sections of society, which is expected to contribute to the overall development of the state and the nation.
