Amidst controversy, Adipurush's box office collection touches Rs. 280 crores.
An adaptation of Ramayana, Adipurush directed by Om Raut earned Rs 140 crore at the worldwide box office. Production banner T-Series remarked that this movie recorded the highest day-one collection for any film made in Hindi on a pan-India level. The multilingual 3D spectacular movie was released on the 16th of June, and stars Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh as the lead characters.
Makers of the movie claim that Adipurush has joined the league of movies like War, Brahmastra and Pathaan that obtain the position of the highest pan-India opener for any Hindi film released in other languages. But the movie immediately gained negative attention cause of the dialogues. Political parties and religious organisations took offence to the low-grade dialogues used in the movie by the character Lord Hanuman. They demanded an apology from the makers of the movie.
Despite all the criticism, the movie raked in ₹140 crore globally on the day of its release. The critics believe that Adipurush is an attempt to malign the deities' reputation and question the silence of political parties that 'call themselves custodians of religion'.
The filmmaker stands his ground and said “I have set out to make an honest film. My intentions are pure and my efforts sincere. I would never trivialise my cinema. I have made a film for the younger generation in their language and format. In the last few days, I have witnessed many youngsters enjoying the film. The film is getting heart-warming and good attention. Of course, it is also accompanied by criticism but then which filmmaker can escape that?”
Adipurush seems engulfed in controversy because of its objectionable dialogues, problematic scenes or inappropriate character representation. Many cities in India have decided to ban movie screenings because of the controversy surrounding it. Film writer Manoj Muntashir and director Om Raut have received death threats from Kshatriya Karni Sena at a press conference held in Madhya Pradesh.
Producer and former Chairman of CBFC Pahlaj Nihalani commented that there are no learned people. “It’s filled with party workers and all random officers screening movies and clear it without raising objections. The chairman is not available to look after the functioning. In the absence of a proper system, a film like Adipurush getting a certificate is obvious.”
The censor board should not have given a clearance certificate because the dialogues used are definitely objectionable. Revising them won't make much difference as there is a lot of objectional content. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh wondered how the censor could clear the movie and feels that the makers have made a mockery of religion. “However, CBFC comes into the picture much later. The onus is on the director and writer and for me, they are to be blamed."
Arun Govil who portrayed Lord Ram's character in the original Ramayana says, “Ramayan se aap cheddh-chaadh na karein. (Don't mess with Ramayan). We don’t want anyone to mess with our faith. Makers are revising the dialogues because they don’t want people to react further. Par jin logon ne film already dekh li hai, woh dobara dekhne toh jayenge nahi. (But those who have seen the film already, will not go to see it again)”
