The Department of Archaeology did an inspection at Janjire-Dharavi Fort at Uttan, Bhayander (West). The department visited this fort and took residual samples and photographs. Janjire - Dharavi is a historical fort at Uttan Chowk village, Bhayander (West) and was built between 1737 and 1739 during the Portuguese-Maratha fight.
In the last four–five years, the fort lovers have done several conservation campaigns for maintaining the heritage and importance associated with these places. There are many historical stones, structures, and cannons in the city that need to be inspected by the Archaeology department and conservation work can be initiated for their perseverance.
When fort lovers started the beautification campaign at Janjire-Dharavi, at the same time shady activities also began to take place for which several complaints were registered. The Human Rights Commission took notice of this issue and intervened and is working to solve the matter.
A photograph of the ruins and specimens of construction were noted and collected at Janjire – Dharavi. A report will be prepared on this by the archaeologists and shall be submitted to the Director of the Department. The assistant from Ratnagiri Director's office, archaeologist Praneet Kumar, Dharavi Fort Preservation Committee President Shreyas Sawant and General Secretary Rohit Suvarna visited the fort to collate information.
Though the conservation campaign has begun at Janjire – Dharavi fort, the fort lovers said that there are many other historical structures in the surrounding villages that should be inspected by the archaeology department. In recent years, there are sites that have been discovered and have historical significance. Like say, there was 7th century stone that was discovered, then there is a 15th-century old church in Uttan and a cannon lying partially in the ground was found in Manori village.
