Opposition is well united: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who recently visited Washington DC and in a press conference there stated that the Opposition in India was 'pretty well united'. His party members are in touch with fellow Opposition. With next year's Lok Sabha elections drawing near and, in an effort to stir the rival political parties against the BJP government at the Centre, Gandhi made this statement at the National Press Club. He spoke on a range of topics and answered several questions put forth.

Rahul said, “The opposition is pretty well united, and it’s getting more & more united. We are in conversations with all the Opposition. I think quite a lot of good work is happening there. It’s a complicated discussion because there are spaces where we are competing with the Opposition. So, a bit of give and take is required.

At the distinguished Stanford University, the Congress leader said, six months ago, the drama began when the Opposition in India was struggling. A huge financial dominance, institutional capture … struggling to fight the democratic fight in our country. None of the systems was working. Democracy isn’t just about an Opposition party but it’s about several institutions that support the Opposition. Those institutions were either captured or were not playing the role they were supposed to play.”

Rahul Gandhi took a jibe at PM Modi as he spoke to the Indian audience in California. He remarked some people in India have the “disease” of being under the impression that they know everything. The remarks triggered a backlash from the BJP, who accused him of maligning India’s image on foreign soil.

Rahul Gandhi's US visit included San Francisco, Washington DC and New York.
