Siddaramaiah is appointed as Karnataka's new CM and DK Shivakumar as deputy CM
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge finally broke the political gridlock over the CM in Karnataka and in one accord formed the new governance. So, Siddaramaiah is the new chief minister of Karnataka with DK Shivakumar as his deputy.
The party had called a Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting in Bengaluru. The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief wrote to all the legislators, asking them to attend the meeting of newly-elected MLAs, MLCs and MPs at the Indira Gandhi Bhavan on Queen’s Road. Regarding the chief ministership, both the candidates Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar demonstrated their candidacy in front of the top political leaders.
In the recently held elections to the 224-member Assembly, the Congress made a victorious win by claiming 135 seats. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the former prime minister H D Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal (Secular) secured 66 and 19 seats respectively.
The Congress has decided on a rotational tenure of two-and-a-half years for both leaders. The decision comes after days of uncertainty since the political party gained a magnificent victory in the southern state of Karnataka. The swearing-in of the newly elected chief minister was held in Bengaluru on May 20.
Siddaramaiah started his political career with the Janata Parivar and joined the Congress in 2006 after being ousted from HD Deve Gowda's Janata Dal (Secular). He is only the second chief minister after Devraj Urs to have completed a five-year term.
