Teen prodigy D Gukesh replaces Viswanathan Anand as India's top ranked chess player
Teenage Grandmaster D Gukesh replaced the legend icon Viswanathan Anand as India's top chess player after almost three decades. Since July 1986, Anand has been India's No.1 and Gukesh went ahead of Anand and is ranked No.8 in the world.
The 17-year-old lost to Magnus Carlsen in the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cup in Baku. For the first time, Gukesh entered the top 10 of the FIDE rating list. Five-time world champion Anand is currently ranked No.9. Gukesh's rating is 2758 while Anand's is 2754. The teen prodigy attained three more points in the rating after the FIDE game match.
Another teen genius R Praggnanandhaa gained recognition from the world and India when he lost the FIDE World Cup final to Carlsen.
Currently, in the official FIDE rating list, there are five Indians in the top 30. Arjun Erigaisi is at no. 29 and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi stands at no. 27. Gukesh went ahead of his mentor Anand in the Live World (FIDE) rankings during the World Cup in Baku.
Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh have been chosen as part of the Indian squad for the forthcoming Asian Games. They will participate in a preparatory camp in Kolkata and Tata Steel Chess India tournament.
