Yashasvi Jaiswal Makes History With Dream Debut, Becomes First Indian to Achieve Unique Feat
Yashasvi Jaiswal has quickly become the talk of the town as he made his international debut in style, surpassing the 150-run mark on day three of the first Test against West Indies. He had already scored his maiden Test century on the second day in Dominica and resumed his innings on the third day at 143, just 7 runs away from creating history. With little time wasted, Jaiswal became the first Indian batsman to achieve this feat on his debut in an overseas match.
It's worth noting that Shikhar Dhawan currently holds the record for the highest number of runs scored by an Indian on Test debut. However, his remarkable 187-run knock took place against Australia at home in March 2013. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma also made an impressive debut with 177 runs, but it was a home match against West Indies in 2013. Sharma's innings stopped at 171, making him the third-highest scorer for India on a Test debut.
Jwala Singh, who has witnessed Jaiswal's growth up close, always had a strong belief that the young batsman would excel in international cricket, and he is delighted to see his prediction coming true. Jaiswal reached the century milestone on the second day of the ongoing first Test against West Indies, becoming the 17th Indian player to achieve a debut Test hundred. Scoring an unbeaten 143 from 350 balls, he provided India with a healthy lead of 162 runs in the first innings, following West Indies' meager total of 150 on the opening day in Dominica.
Jwala, who was in transit in the UK when Jaiswal reached his century, expressed his happiness, stating that the young player has gained valuable experience by playing against world-class bowlers in the IPL and domestic cricket. As a coach, Jwala always emphasizes the importance of focusing on the ball rather than the bowler and reacting effectively. He highlights the need for batters to stay in the present, face each ball on merit, and believe in their abilities, regardless of the match format.
Jaiswal's journey to cricket stardom began when he moved to Dadar in Mumbai at the age of 10 for cricket training at Azad Maidan. On July 13th, Jaiswal continued Mumbai's proud tradition of producing debut Test centurions for India, joining the ranks of Shreyas Iyer (vs New Zealand, 2021), Prithvi Shaw (vs West Indies, 2018), and India captain Rohit Sharma (vs West Indies, 2013).
